Screen-free Week

Did you know this is screen-free week?  We are already halfway through, and I must admit I have not given up my TV or iPhone.  But there is something to be said for taking time away from screens to enjoy the beautiful weather, or spend some time reading a book.

If you are looking for ways to reduce your children’s screen time, I came across this article at mediasmarts.ca which has some great tips.  Check it out!

Happy New Year!

Summer is my favourite season, and this past summer was amazing.  I was busy planning our wedding, but I also had time to do all my favourite summer things.  I spent time with family who came to visit from across the country.  I had lunch with friends and went for walks in the sun.  I got to try out new recipes and cook some delicious meals.  I stayed up late and slept in.  I had time for all my crafts: knitting, cross stitching, and card making.  I travelled to Portland and had fun exploring a new city.  And I read a lot of books!

While the summer was wonderful, I am glad to be back at school.  I love September and the fresh start it represents.  It was great to spend time with my class from last year.  I got to hear all about their summer adventures and see how they’ve grown.  But now I am ready to meet my new class, to get to know them and travel with them along their learning journey.  I’m looking forward to this week, to meeting my new students and their families, to officially starting the new year!

A Special Event

As most of you know, I got married this summer.  Our wedding day was wonderful, we had a fantastic time celebrating with all our friends and family!  I wanted to put up a few photos from my wedding to share with my students and their families.  Click on the photos to see larger versions.

Reader’s Theatre

Well, we are rapidly approaching the end of June.  I can’t believe how fast the year has gone!  The last two weeks of school always feel like a runaway train rushing down the hill – time just seems to keep speeding up.

We are wrapping up several projects we have been working on, including publishing stories (stay tuned for books coming home!) and reader’s theatre.  Any and all are invited to come to our classroom this Friday at 1 pm to see our fractured fairy tale performances.  The students will be performing Little Late Riding Hood, The Popsicle Boy, Slurping Beauty, and The Brementown Rappers.  The stories are quite funny, and the students have been working hard to read fluently with expression.  Hope to see many of you there!

Happy Holidays!

I wanted to thank you all again for the very thoughtful class gift.  I decided to buy a Kobo e-reader.  It’s something I had been considering, and now I will think of this lovely class every time I use it.  I still love physical books and will always love curling up with a book, but being able to put books on my Kobo will be wonderful when I travel; it only weighs 200 grams and holds hundreds of books!

I hope you all have a restful holiday.  Have fun with family and friends, catch up on sleep, eat tasty treats, and find some time to curl up with a good book!
